about Uly Paya
“Everything that is deep within us needs to be dug out. That’s why I rarely construct a work of art. It just comes to me from deep down”
Each of my paintings has a very individual origin story. That’s why there are practically no series that I paint or produce for the art market. I want to stay me. Sometimes it takes years to complete a work of art. Since October 1990, I have selected and numbered 600 works of art for my personal art list.

Art Projects beyond reality
This is the biggest cat on earth. I put this cat on the roof of my studio in Vienna in front of a huge school and also added some paintings on the fassade. Not only astronauts but also children can look at the huge cat. The intention was simple: “it should bring joy”.
Design
I worked as a designer in various fields.
This is my well-known “cognition ring” or “family ring”, where two people hold a cognition together.
the church of knowledge
This art action shows the concrete church in Villach/St. Martin with a piece of art by me. I had written a manifesto around 1996 to create a church of knowledge that would put faith in another language. Bishop Kapellari with his book “and have almost lost the language” was the reason for this. I was able to present this manifesto to the city of Villach, the parish, the dean at the time and the bishop and had very valuable discussions.
Exhibitions
After a lot of exhibition activity in my early years, I took part in larger international exhibitions such as in Russia (Moscow 1997), Germany (Künzelsau 1999), France (Angouleme 2002) and most recently in Egypt (Cairo 2022). In addition, there were large solo exhibitions, for example in Austria in Vienna in 2005 at “Die Galerie” and at the headquarter of Hewlett-Packard Vienna with around 70 works of art. I also joined some group exhibitions such as in the Museumsquartier in 2004 with an international surrealist group. From 2005 to 2022 I deliberately did not hold any public exhibitions, but only private exhibitions for collectors and interested parties in my studio in Vienna.
Musician
“In addition to my painting, I am also a musician.” I have composed over 120 songs, I sing, play the piano and the western guitar. So far I have released several CDs. Like painting, the songs are about a profound examination of life, be it the inner demons or the meaning of life itself. But humor and imagination are never neglected. The music ranges from atmospheric singer-songwriter pieces to funny and strange children’s songs that are very loved.

Film
As a filmmaker Uly Paya produced about 20 art- and shortfilms like “time synchronicity” or “cognitionsfruits” that was released at the Museums Quarter in Vienna in 2004. What does it mean to have an idea? Where does it come from and did it actually and magically arise within us or just a strange reflection of the world? How can I grab it, where is the access to it? There could be a possible answer in this film “cognitionfruits” by Uly Paya from 2003.

“Faust III – “The Tragedy of Light”
This play of Uly Paya is a poem about Faust and Mephisto, who wants to free himself from darkness.
The poem took over two decades to be completed in 2018.
The Academy
“philosophizing with children, youngsters and adults”
Philosophizing is something very special and bigger than many people think. It is a cultural technique that unfortunately hardly exists in the school system or in society. That’s why I founded the academy in 2010 to bring philosophizing to Austria.
Where do we come from? What is life? What does time mean? And who makes the values?
These are examples of what my great team and me talk about in workshops or in philo art camps we created.
I often combine philosophizing with art and special exercises in my seminars and educational programs.
